A Subtitling Solution for the E-Learning Industry.
The Client

A product software company specializing in learning management systems and creating custom e-learning solutions for organizations in various industries.

The Situation

The client developed custom e-learning software for an international transportation company to train employees from various departments. The e-learning process was designed mainly around audio-visual content. The client had a library of training video materials on specialized software for navigation of carriers.

The aim was to translate the training videos from English to Russian by adding subtitles to them and creating a glossary to maintain consistency within this and for future projects.

The Challenge
  • The videos were aimed at training both newly hired and experienced employees, and featured great technical knowledge and complex industry terminology.
  • We were asked to provide a subtitling solution for a large volume of content, around 60 hours of video material.
  • Because of the linguistic aspects of the languages and the technicality of the content, we needed to take into account readability, timecodes, length restrictions, and the rhythm of the video when creating the subtitles.
The Solution
  • To meet the need of the project, we created a team of linguists specialized in e-learning, IT, and technical terminology. Our team consisted of four translators, a reviser, and a reviewer from the Quality Control department.
  • We chose SDL Trados Studio as the best CAT tool for this project, as it provides special subtitling features that make it possible to count the line lengths and preserve the correct timecodes.
  • To make sure the translation was relevant and contained no terminological mistranslations, we worked with specialists in the transportation industry.
  • We created the project termbase to keep consistency throughout the videos.
  • The analysis performed in SDL Trados Studio showed the source text contained a large amount of cross-file repetitions. And by carrying out the project with the use of a CAT tool, the client saved 33% on the overall localization cost.
The Result
  • The client received successfully translated and subtitled training videos in the required formats.
  • The client was provided with a relevant termbase management solution, and had a glossary created for their future projects.
  • The employees benefiting from the training videos left positive feedback on the translated product.
  • The client reduced the expected localization costs by 33% thanks to the advanced technologies we used.
  • With respect to effectively transmitting the tone and information in the videos and overcoming the challenges subtitling posed, the client received the best outcome within the shortest time possible.
